Letter from OCSL Chair, Shar Sumner on Racism
The league is dealing with complaints about racial comments and abuse during OCSL games. Racism is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
"Discrimination of any kind against a country, private person or group of people on account of ethnic origin, gender, language, religion, politics or any other reason is strictly prohibited and punishable by suspension or expulsion”
We all love soccer and play with a dedication to our team and a drive to compete. I am not naïve enough to think that people do not do and say things that they regret in the heat of competition. While it’s an unpleasant part of the game, and it is not condoned in any way by the league, it’s something that we and our referees are dealing with more often.
Our league is one that is based as much on competition as it is on a shared love and respect of the game. Racism goes beyond a lack of respect; it is a stain on the game that must never be tolerated. I ask that each of you hold yourselves and your teammates accountable for behaviours that cross these lines.
